Landscape Design with a Purpose
If you’ve admired the look of neighborhoods like Elk Grove, Gold River, Carmichael, or the Pocket in Sacramento, chances are you’ve seen the influence of Gloriann Carlisle. A landscape architect with deep roots in site planning and sustainable design, Gloriann has helped shape some of the Sacramento region’s most recognizable communities, including parts of Serrano in El Dorado Hills.
Originally from Atlanta, Gloriann earned her degree in landscape architecture from the University of Georgia, a five-year program that included time studying in Cortona, Italy. There, surrounded by terraced hillsides and centuries-old gardens, she learned the classical design principles that still guide her work: strong focal points, thoughtful structure, and landscapes that “stand the test of time.” “Good design is an investment in the future,” Gloriann says. “And gardening is America’s number one hobby. It should also bring comfort, beauty, and a sense of connection to your home.”
Gloriann’s career has included projects with architects, developers, Caltrans, and even the landscape materials yard off Bradshaw Road. These days, however, Gloriann takes on only the occasional client and focuses her talents on residential yards, helping homeowners transform outdoor spaces into beautiful, water-wise retreats. With California water agencies encouraging turf removal (rebates up to $2,000 per household are available to Sacramento County Water Agency (SCWA) Customers through the Cash for Grass program) it’s the perfect time to rethink the traditional lawn. Drought-resistant and native plants like rosemary, manzanita, dwarf rock rose, and Erysimum create colorful, low-maintenance gardens that thrive in our dry climate.
The photo shows one of Gloriann’s native garden designs, right here in Sacramento. It’s a perfect blend of sustainability and style, featuring California poppies, our state flower.
